Governor Jindal appoints Landreneau to head National Guard

BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal re-appointed Adjutant General Major General Bennett C. Landreneau to lead the Louisiana National Guard.

Jindal said, “General Landreneau has consistently shown strong leadership and experience in leading Louisiana’s brave men and women of the National Guard. He has a deep understanding and respect of what it means to be on the front line, to run toward danger, and not away from it in times of disaster and on missions to defend our freedom across the world. During this time of war, General Landreneau is the best person to continue leading our Louisiana soldiers.”

Landreneau is currently serving as the Adjutant General for Louisiana, responsible for the deployment and coordination of programs, policies and plans of the Louisiana Army and the Air National Guard and their more than 11,000 members. He was first appointed to adjutant general over the National Guard November 8, 1997.

Landreneau is also the chairman of the Army Force Structure Committee of the Adjutants General Association, and he is a member of the Governor’s Military Advisory Board, the Louisiana Drug Policy Board, and the Governor’s Homeland Security Advisory Council.

Before his appointment to adjutant general, Landreneau served as a civilian employee with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service for more than 30 years.

Landreneau enlisted as a private in the Louisiana National Guard in 1969. He then attended Louisiana State Officer Candidate School, and in 1971, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He served on active duty in Southwest Asia as a commander during Operation Desert Storm.

He has received many awards for his service, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Louisiana Distinguished Service Medal, the Louisiana Legion of Merit and the Louisiana War Cross.

Landreneau has a bachelor’s degree in agronomy from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and he is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.
