Vermilion Parish to allow cell phones on campus; jogging pants, skinny jeans out
The Vermilion School Board has two big decisions to make for next school year.
They have to decide if cell phones will be allowed on campus and they also have to decide if skinny jeans and jegging/jogging pants will not be allowed campus.
At Monday night’s committee meeting, school board members learned that Vermilion Parish high school principals are OK with letting high school students carry their cell phones on campus. Today, students bring their cell phones to school and either leave them in their vehicle or turn them into the front office until the end of school.
However, if the school board votes to allow cell phones on campus, and a teacher or administrator sees a student using a cell phone, the cell phone will be taken.
Not every school board member is in favor of letting students bring cell phones into classrooms.
School board member Sara Duplechain said she has two children in high school and she has heard horror stories about students using their cell phones on campus.
“I totally disagree. I would never want a phone in a book sack,” said Duplechain. “To me it is easy to check phones in or leave them in a vehicle.”
School board members learned that in the student handbook under dress code, skinny jeans and jegging pants (also known as joggers) will not be allowed on campus.
They will join the baggy pants, distressed jeans, hip huggers, low riders, capri jeans and bell bottoms as prohibited on school campuses.
