Abbeville Wildcats fall to Breaux Bridge
The Abbeville Wildcats probably played their best game of the year but it was not enough to beat the Breaux Bridge Tigers on Friday.
The Wildcats fell to the taller Breaux Bridge, 52-48.
AHS drops to 12-6 overall and 1-1 in district. Next up for Abbeville is a home game against St. Martinville (15-9) on Monday.
Abbeville head coach Berwick Hamilton said youth and size were two factors in Abbeville’s loss.
“They had the size under the goal and out rebounded us,” said Hamilton. “We made some unforced turnovers but it’s because of our youth. We have freshmen and sophomores on the floor.”
The Wildcats only led one time, 5-3, in the first period. They spent the rest of the game trying to overtake Breaux Bridge, who is now 2-0 in district.
At halftime, Abbeville was in the game, down 28-22.
The Wildcats came out attacking Breaux Bridge inside and it was working in the second half.
Jahadi White drove the lane for a layup and Abbeville was only down, 28-26, two minutes into the second half.
The Tigers maintained a six to 10 lead throughout the second half. With 44 seconds left remaining in the game, Abbeville’s Javontae Decuir made a layup thanks to Jacolby Senegal’s heads up play after knocking the ball out of a Breaux Bridge player’s hands. Senegal got the ball and dished it to Decuir. The play sparked the Wildcats and Wildcat fans and put them down by only four points.
Abbeville got within three, 51-48, on Senegal’s put-back with four seconds left in the game.
Breaux Bridge, in a double bonus, made one out of the two free throws to seal the four-point victory.
No Wildcats scored in double digits. Senegal and Demarcus Collins each made nine for AHS.
Nadeadrion Mouton tacked on eight, Matt Johnson, 6, and Jymyri Evans with 5 points.
