Abbeville Wildcats fall to St. Martinville
The Abbeville Wildcats' offense has left the building and first-year head coach Gary Adkins can't seem to find it.
The Wildcats lost to St. Martinville 23-6 in a district game on Thursday in Wildcat Stadium.
It is the third game in a row that Abbeville has only scored a touchdown in four quarters.
To make matters worse, the Wildcats offense is having trouble getting positive yards.
On Thursday, Abbeville finished with four total yards of offense. They had 1 yard of offense on the ground and three yards in the air.
Abbeville quarterback Darmarcus Collins had a bad night. He finished with 14 carries for minus 72 yards. He was sacked at least five times. In 11 out of 14 carries he had minus yards. His most positive gain of the night was two yards.
The top rushers for AHS were Jose Pedroza (9-25) and Kavon Brown (9-24).
Even special teams had trouble for AHS.
The Wildcats gave up two safeties and both came on the punt team. Abbeville punter Carlos Marquez went to punt standing in the end zone, and the head referee called a safety when he thought Marquez's knee touched the ground when he caught the snap. Not long after that, Marquez was standing in the end zone getting ready to punt and the ball was snapped over his head for another safety. To make matters worse, he had a punt blocked in the second half.
Abbeville's only touchdown came with two minutes left in the game.
St. Martinville was driving when linebacker Chris Shelvin stripped the football from a St. Martinville running back. Shelvin darted 55 yards down field. As he approached the goal line, he slowed down and a St. Martinville player knocked the ball out of his hands. Alertly, Abbeville's Tavis Briggs fell on the ball.
Abbeville's offense scored from five yards out on the next play. AHS fullback Matt Johnson scooted left for the score with two minutes in the game. The two point conversion was missed.
