Kaplan Pirates explode in 2nd quarter

BERWICK — The Kaplan Pirates found themselves down 13-8 at the end of the first period and then exploded for 24 second-quarter points en route to a 32-12 district win.
Kaplan, now winners of two straight district games, improves to 4-3 and 2-2 in district. The Pirates entertain Franklin for homecoming this Friday.
The Berwick Panthers jumped to an 8-0 lead on quarterback Collin Louvier’s 2-yard run. He finished the game with 16 carries for 69 yards.
The Pirates answered with a scoring drive of their own. Julius Johnson, who rushed for his second straight 200-yard game, darted 45 yards for a touchdown. He converted the two points that put Kaplan on top 8-7.
Three minutes later, Berwick answered with a Louviere 19-yard touchdown throw to Larenz Clark.
Kaplan would then score the next 24 points in the second quarter to put the game away.
Kaplan quarterback Jade Herpin had a 2-yard TD run and TJ Broussard had a 2-point conversion run that put Kaplan ahead 16-13.
Johnson, who finished with 211 yards on 29 carries, had an 8-yard touchdown run. He also converted the two points to make it a 24-13 game.
With 40 seconds in the first half, Kaplan added one more touchdown on a 1-yard Herpin run.
Kaplan’s defense did not let Berwick score again in the second half.
Jade Herpin had six carries for 12 yards and two touchdowns.
Ridge Herpin ran four times for 45 yards, while TJ Broussard had three for 29 yards.
Throwing the ball, Jade was 3-of-5 for 34 yards. Johnson had two receptions for 33 yards.
Berwick had 203 yards of total offense and Kaplan had 356 yards.
The Pirates also had eight penalties for 50 yards.
Berwick’s quarterback completed 9-out-23 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown.
