VC too much for Hanson
The Vermilion Catholic Eagles jumped out to a 13-0 lead six minutes into the game against Hanson, then cruised to a 54-0 district win.
With the first team offense and defense in the game in the first half, VC had 327 yards of offense, while holding Hanson to only 44 yards of offense.
They also led 40-0.
VC quarterback Hunter Frith had his typical night throwing the football. He was 11 out of 15 for 263 yards and threw five touchdowns. Those statistics are impressive and by the way, they were done in the first half. Frith and the rest of the starters did not play the second half.
VC head coach Russell Kuhns started his junior varsity players the second half and the freshmen team even got to play in the fourth quarter.
“It is always good to get the starters out and keep them healthy,” said Kuhns. “Staying healthy is the number one thing in Class 1A football. Anytime I can get those starters off the field and the let young players get some experience, that is always a good thing.”
Despite having the junior varsity and freshmen team, the Eagles managed to keep the Tigers out of the end zone in the second half.
In the first half, Frith threw short passes that went for long yards. He hit Emile Trahan on a bubble screen pass (3 yards down field) and Trahan darted 24 yards down field for a touchdown.
On VC’s next possession, Frith threw a pass to Gage Broussard, who turned it into a 46-yard touchdown play. Emile Trahan nailed the extra point to VC the 13-0 lead.
VC scored again after faking a punt. Tyler Derouen ran 22 yards for a first down.
VC running back Kalix Broussard, who rushed for 72 yards in the game, had a 18-yard run. On the next play, Frith nailed Payton Trahan on a 33-yard TD pass play to make it 19-0 in the first period.
On VC’s next possession, the Eagles could not be stopped. Frith threw a 42-yard reception to Tyler Derouen and then connected with Emile Trahan for a 39-yard TD strike.
Ahead 40-0 to start the second half, J.T Lege relieved Frith at quarterback. He was able to lead his team to the end zone in the fourth quarter.
With the help of tailback Alex LeBlanc, the Eagles marched 70 yards for a touchdown. LeBlanc had three carries for 20 yards in the drive. Lege threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Griffin Dyson with five minutes to play in the game.
LeBlanc finished the game with five carries with 29 yards.
Tyler Derouen had four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, Emile Trahan had two catches for 63 yards and a touchdown and Payton Trahan had 2 for 44 yards and a touchdown, while Gage Broussard had a 50-yard TD catch.
VC has a road game against Ascension Episcopal in a district show down next Friday.
