Delcambre volleyball team beats North Vermilion

LEROY - The Delcambre Lady Panthers took three sets from the North Vermilion Lady Panthers 24-19, 25-22 and 25-18 on Thursday to improve to 2-2 on the young season.
Delcambre head volleyball coach Lisa Richard said her team needed to win this match.
“We needed this one bad,” said Richard. “We lost the first two matches of the season in three sets against two teams I think we could have given them a much better match. We played sloppy in the last match we lost. We could not recover when we got down. Tonight, however, we got down but the girls stepped it up and did not give up.”
North Vermilion, who now plays in its school gym after playing eight years at Cecil Picard Elementary, has now lost three straight matches. The Lady Patriots gave ESA all it could handle on Tuesday, then fell to Iowa the next day on the road. Then they came right back and had to play against Delcambre on Thursday.
First year NV volleyball coach Kirby Myers felt his team was not into the game on Thursday because of playing two matches prior to playing Delcambre.
“Mentally, physically, three games in a week was tough. It took a lot out of them. Once we got down, our confidence went down.”
The Lady Panthers took control of the first set from the start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead with the help of Delcambre’s Nicole Bouillion’s unreturnable serves.
NV rallied and took a 10-9 lead on a DHS attack error. But that would be it because Delcambre scored 8 straight points to ice the first set.
The second set, the Lady Patriots jumped on Delcambre by taking a 7-0 lead. NV’s Emily Faulk aced a serve down the line to make it 8-1.
Down 9-2, the Lady Panthers began a comeback, thanks to their unreturnable serves.
On Kacie McDonald back-to-back serves, the Lady Panthers closed the lead to 12-9. Asya Comeaux had a kill, and Bouillion had a kill for the Lady Panthers to trim the lead to 14-11.
The Lady Patriots looked to have shaken off Delcambre’s comeback by regaining the lead 18-12. But Delcambre came back and cut the lead to 19-18.
It was tied 22-22 on McDonald’s no return serve. North Vermilion never scored another point, thanks to McDonald’s difficult serves to handle.
“We take pride in our serving,” said Richard. “We are not tall, so we have to serve well.”
In the third and final set, Delcambre was in control the entire time. NV tied it 15-15 but Delcambre would score five straight points to secure the match.
