Abbeville head coach learns what type of cancer he has

Abbeville High head football coach Gary Adkins learned early this week he does not have thyroid cancer. He instead has a form of cancer located in in his tonsil.
Earlier this week he received the news after last week’s biopsy.
“The doctor walked in and said, “You do not have cancer of the thyroids.’” I said OK. The doctor told me I have Squamous Cell Carcinoma,” said Adkins. “The cancer has derived from my tonsil. There is a nodule on my left tonsil. There are some malignant cancer cells in there.”
After learning what type of cancer he does have, he made an appointment with a specialist in Baton Rouge. His son will drive him to Baton Rouge on Thursday to learn what is the next step in fighting the cancer.
After speaking with his Lafayette doctor, Adkins is expecting the doctor in Baton Rouge to remove his tonsil and then begin six straight weeks of radiation.
Adkins is hoping he can do radiation near by and return to Abbeville High after radiation. .
“I want them to take it (tonsil) out, radiate me and get me back to normal,” said Adkins. “After hearing the news, I felt some relief. I learned it is a type of cancer. It is not , ‘sew me up and send me home.’”
Adkins is still battling headaches and has trouble seeing out of one eye.
A CAT Scan on his brain came back negative, which he called “great news.”
This week Abbeville is at home against Berwick (0-1).
Last week the Abbeville head coach did his play calling from the press box because he had trouble with his balance. Adkins expects to be on the sideline tonight with his team.
He said not being on the field was difficult, so he will do his best to be with his team.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
