Freshmen will start for Gueydan on Friday

Not many teams in the area are going to start as many freshmen as the Gueydan Bears will on Friday night.
When the game kickoffs at 7 p.m., there is a good chance there will be freshmen in seven positions on both sides of the football.
“I like the work ethic of these freshmen,” said new head Gueydan coach Robert Helo. “They did not miss workouts this summer. While they are young, this is a smart group who picks up the game quick.”
There are 14 freshmen on the team.
The defense could have as many as four freshmen starting. Projected are Holden Guidry at corner, Mark Clark at free safety, William Touchet and Aaron Credeur on the defensive line.
Clark and Touchet are expected to play offense, while freshmen Blaire Broussard will see action at wide receiver.
The Bears open the season at home against Ascension Christian Bears, a Class 1A team from Donaldsonville.
The private school went 3-7 last year and did not make the select team playoffs.
Gueydan comes into Friday’s game with a 30 game losing streak. This past Friday, the Bears dominated the Abbeville junior varsity team 25-0.
Coach Helo was able to see film on Ascension Christian and he’s worried about its passing game.
Ascension, who has been in the LHSAA for the last six years, likes to run a spread offense. According to their head coach Joshua Puryear, the spread fits their personnel of 32 players.
“We like to get in the space and by doing that, we are able to use our skilled people,” said Puryear.
He said team is not a run-straight-at-you football because they don;t have the offensive linemen for that kind of offense.
Ascension lost last year’s quarterback who threw for 800 yards. A sophomore is getting the nod for the first time at QB.
Puryear is aware of Gueydan’s 30-game losing streak. Before he arrived at Ascension Christian three years ago, Ascension had not won a varsity game the first three years it began.
“It should be a competitive game,” said Puryear.
