Kaplan Pirates 'Buck Sweep' Erath Bobcats
Everyone on the Erath sideline knew what the play was before the Kaplan Pirates snapped the football.
“Buck Sweep.” The coaches were heard yelling it to the Erath defenders. Every time they yelled it, the Pirates ran it and Erath could not stop it when it counted.
Running the Buck Sweep were Grant Frick and Julious Johnson for the Pirates.
The two runners combined for 100 yards in Kaplan’s 20-15 win over Erath in the Vermilion Parish Jamboree.
Frick had most of the touches with eight for 68 yards. He had long runs of 11, 8, 12 and 27 yards.
Kaplan head coach Stephen Lotief said the Buck Sweep is Kaplan’s bread-and-butter play.
“That is our play. Everyone hangs a hat on a play and that is ours,” he said.
The Pirates were playing without their starting quarterback Jade Herpin, who is recovering from a broken hand. Coach Lotief’s son, Daniel Lotief, played in place of Herpin.
“We did what we had to do,” said Coach Lotief’. “We battled and overcame adversity. We had players playing new positions. This was a scrimmage. We were not worried about the score. I saw some good things.”
The Pirates took their opening drive and marched 80 yards down field in 11 plays. Frick had a three-yard touchdown run. Kaplan did not convert the two-point play and held a 6-0 lead.
Erath, on its second possession, got seven points on the score board. The Bobcats had good field position thanks to a 60-yard kickoff return by Coy LeBlanc.
Erath quarterback Ben LeBlanc connected with Erik Belanger for a 17-yard reception. Two plays later Scott Moore scored from three yards out.
Ben LeBlanc kicked the extra point for a 7-6 lead at halftime.
Kaplan took its opening second half possession and marched 42 yards for a go-ahead score. Frick had four carries on the drive for 37 yards.
Johnson punched it in from the 1-yard line to reclaim the lead for Kaplan.
Back came the Bobcats on their next drive. Elijah Mitchell had a 61-yard TD run. He finished the game with 96 yards on five carries.
LeBlanc connected with Luke Young for the two-point conversion, giving EHS a slim 15-12 lead with 7:26 to go.
Kaplan responded on its final drive of the game. T.J. Broussard took Erath’s kick and ran it back 34 yards into Erath territory.
The Pirates ran nine running plays. On a fourth down and 2, from the EHS 6, Frick went into end zone untouched.
He also converted the two-point to put KHS ahead 20-15 with 1:53 to play.
The Bobcats tried to mount a last minute comeback but Kaplan defensive back Savion Meaux intercepted LeBlanc to kill the drive.
The season begins Friday for both teams. Kaplan entertains Abbeville, while Erath is on the road against Delcambre.
