Rep. Blake Miguez was busy freshman legislator

No one gave freshman State Rep. Blake Miguez the memo that a rookie legislator is supposed to sit back, watch and learn.
Instead, the 33-year-old dove feet first instead of sitting back and watching.
Miguez was able to get five of his six bills sent to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s desk in one form or another. Plus, he helped broker a deal between trucks and truck dealers.
Then to cap it off, he got a firearm education bill passed.
“Many legislators called this session the toughest in a long time due to the budget issues that the State currently faces,” said Miguez. “It was a very challenging session for me but I worked very hard, learned a lot, and had successes as a freshman legislator. I am thankful for the opportunity to service as the District 49 State Rep and will work my hardest to make my constituents proud.”
Miguez, who lives in Iberia Parish, spent Father’s Day with his wife, Ashley, six-month-old daughter and two step children, ages 10 and 12.
Miguez was elected earlier in the year to complete the term of Simone Champagne, who did not finish out her term.
Vermilion Parish State Rep. Bob Hensgens said coming into a session late has its challenges, but Miguez met each one head-on
“I remember what it was like to get there in the middle of a term,’ said Hensgens. “Everyone else has two to three years on you but Blake made friends fast. Blake was never shy to ask others opinions and befriended a lot of veteran legislators to discuss the tough issues. He will do fine, because he is already off to a good start.”
Miguez is already looking forward to the next session, which will have a new governor.
“The biggest goal I have for the next session is hopefully having a governor who will have a long term solution to the budget problems,” Miguez said. “We got it done in the little amount of time we had, but we didn’t fix the long-term problem with our budget. It’s really going to take a strong leader to get the House and Senate together and fix these problems.”
