Rep. Hensgens would like to see all of Hwy. 35 resurfaced
A couple of days before hurricane season begins, Rep. Bob Hensgens introduced a bill that urges the state’s Department of Transportation and Development to do a study on the emergency evacuation route to Hwy. 35 that connects with Hwy. 92, near Rayne.
House Bill 112 recommends that the state transportation department keep the maintenance and upkeep of Hwy 35. In the bill he explains the importance of the two highways for evacuation and economic development purposes.
He is hoping by getting House Bill 112 passed, the resurfacing of all Hwy. 35 could be added to the future lists of state highway projects.
“Many of the constituents in Kaplan have been complaining about Highway 35, so I thought maybe if I can get them to study all funding possibilities, that maybe I can get the highway added to the future projects’ list,” Rep. Hensgens said.
Rep. Hensgens said Hwy. 35 is the main evacuation highway from south of Kaplan to Forked Island. The highway also goes north into Acadia Parish, which is not in his district. It is also the most da
maged part of highway. Hensgens did say, however, that many Vermilion Parish residents drive on Hwy. 35 when they leave the parish.
