VC hits five doubles in first round playoff victory

The No. 13 seed Vermilion Catholic hit a season-high five doubles that brought in seven RBIs en route to a 9-3 first-round victory over No. 20 seed East Beauregard on Thursday.
The Eagles (11-14) will be on the road next week against Cedar Creek, the No. 4 seed. Cedar Creek won 15-0 in its first round game.
Second-year VC Head Coach Steven Adams Jr. was surprised to hear his team hit that many doubles that scored seven RBIs.
“Hitting that many doubles is not typically in our game plan,” said Adams. “I felt like we laid bunts down today when we had to. Then the doubles became a treat.
“This was the best game of the game so far for us,” he added.
VC had five doubles and five singles. Cade Boudreaux, who bats in the No. 9 slot, hit two doubles that scored four runs.
Down 1-0, the double-attack started in the bottom of the third inning when Gage Trahan led off with a double. Cade Boudreaux sacrificed him over to second base. He moved to third on Emile Trahan’s successful bunt.
Then the second double occurred in the same inning. Tyler Derouen, a left hander, had two strikes but then took the next pitch to right field for a 2 RBI-double that put VC ahead 2-1. Chris Sagrera reached first on a throwing error, and Derouen moved to third base.
Then came the third double of the third inning.
Harrison Vicknair, the designated hitter, did his job and knocked in a run with a double. Scoring was pinch-runner Nick Langlinais for a convincing 4-1 lead.
The Eagles scored four runs thanks to three doubles in the third inning.
Ahead 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles exploded for five more runs that put the icing on the cake.
It would be a double that once again would do the damage.
With the bases loaded, Boudreaux, who had already hit a RBI-double in the fourth inning, came up to bat in the fifth inning. What did he do? He smacked a bases-loaded 3-RBI double to put the game away. Emile Trahan followed with an RBI-single that gave VC the 9-3 score.
Chris Sagrera started on the hill for VC. He pitched three complete innings to get the victory. He gave up seven hits and was pulled in the fourth inning, leading 4-3.
Lefty Tyler Derouen came on in relief and shut down East Beauregard for the final three innings. He had 10 strike outs in his appearance.
Coach Adams said the game plan was to let Sagrera throw three innings and then come with someone else.
“Our plan was to throw four guys,” he said. “Chris was throwing well enough so we extended him. We had an opportunity to switch him, so we switched him. He threw well.
“Derouen came in and also did a great job.”
Top hitters for VC were: Hunter Frith (2 singles), J.T. Lege (1 single), Emile Trahan (2 singles), Gage Trahan (double, hit by pitch), Derouen (double, single), Vicknair (double), Boudreaux (2 doubles).
