Abbeville councilman walking around city with open hand gun
An Abbeville city councilman is wearing an open handgun because he fears for his life.
Councilman Wayne Landry has been seen around Abbeville wearing a holster with a pistol in it.
Landry is not violating the law because the gun is not concealed.
Landry explained the reason for the pistol is because he fears a neighbor, who he has had issues with, may do something bad to his family.
“I am fearful for my wife and kids,” said Landry. “It is my legal right. He is stalking me and I am not taking any chances.”
His 22-year-old son, Javayon Joseph, witnessed the neighbor showing his mother, father and his six month old baby a handgun. Joseph was on the road when it occurred. He backs his father up about him carrying a hand gun.
“My dad fears for his life,” said Joseph. “After the incident when the neighbor pulled a gun out on him, my sixth month old child and my mom, he needs to carry a gun.”
The dispute between his family and the neighbor began around two months ago. The Landry family began arguing with the neighbor over trash in Landry’s yard. The neighbor allegedly moved trash in Landry’s yard from one side of the yard to the other without Landry’s permission.
The argument escalated onto the road and then the neighbor allegedly showed the Landry family a gun he had in his truck.
The neighbor was charged and has a court date soon. Since, the Abbeville Police Department have been called multiple times to settle arguments between the two families.
In the meantime, Landry has put up no trespassing signs in his front yard and even a hand made sign saying “Tres Passers Will B Shot.”
On Facebook, there are pictures of Landry posing with other people at McKinley Park located across from Herod Village in Abbeville. He is wearing his gun. At the time the picture was taken, there were children playing at the park.
Landry said he went to the park to “stop a fight.” While there, another fight began and he said he helped stopped that one also. While there he took pictures with different people and stayed less than 10 minutes, he said.
Although he is not violating the law by carrying the gun, Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza was not happy to see Landry wearing it on his hip. Someone sent Mayor Piazza a picture with Landry wearing a red City of Abbeville shirt, his pistol on his hip and children playing in the background at the park.
Mayor Piazza received two phone calls from residents who were at McKinley Park about Landry wearing the gun.
“They were very concerned with the safety of their children,” said Mayor Piazza about the two phone calls. “They were concerned because there was an elected official in one of the municipal parks with a firearm. The person did not think that was appropriate.”
Mayor Piazza said he does not like any city councilman wearing a City of Abbeville shirt if they are doing something that is not right.
“If you are going represent the city, you sure do not want to do anything that is inappropriate or anything the public feels is inappropriate,” said Mayor Piazza. “We (city councilman) are not deputized by the chief of police as auxiliary officers or any type of law enforcement officer. We should not present ourselves as such. We have nothing to do with law enforcement.
“If someone sees someone wearing a city of Abbeville shirt and carrying a firearm, they could think they are presenting themself as some type of police officer and they are not.”
