Abbeville's Hawthorne battles Tuesday on ‘The Voice’
Abbeville’s own Koryn Hawthorne will be taking part in the battle round of “The Voice” on Tuesday. The battle rounds began two weeks ago but the 16-year-old Hawthorne has yet to appear on NBC’s television show.
Her mother Summer Simon’ received an e-mail from “The Voice” on Friday letting the family know what night Hawthorne will battle against another singer.
“We were getting anxious,” said Simon.
Last month blind auditions took place in hopes of getting coaches Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, Christina Aguilera or Blake Shelton to turn their chairs.
Aguilera and Williams turned their chair for Hawthorne.
She sang her version of “My Kind of Love” in the blind audition.
In the battle round, coaches pit two team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of the studio audience.
Hawthorne is a junior at Lighthouse Christian Preparatory School in Abbeville.
She also sings at Crossroads Church in Lafayette and Lighthouse for Jesus Ministry in Abbeville.
Her musical influences are Michael Jackson, Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Beyoncé, along with gospel singers Marvin Sapp and Chris Tomlin.
“Singing is everything that I have, and it is everything I want to do,” Koryn said in an interview on The Voice. “My hope to be on this show is to grow as an artist and to learn anything I can.”
Koryn said she selected Aguilera as a coach because how how she felt, because she was talking to her as a person who knew what it was like to be a singer at the age of 16.
“She wanted to find out who I was as an artist,” Koryn said. “That was everything I needed right there.”
