Vermilion Parish School Board about to begin educating public on millage renewa
At their regularly scheduled meeting, the Vermilion Parish School Board received a presentation that will be given to the public which explains the millage renewal that will be on the May 2 ballot.
Superintendent Jerome Puyau explained, “Twenty years ago, the voters of Vermilion Parish approved a ten mills property tax specifically dedicated to support safety and educational programs. On May 2, the citizens will vote to renew this millage for 10 more years.
“This is not a new tax. This renewal will simply allow the millage to continue at its current rate and dedication.”
Puyau said because this is a renewal of an existing millage, there will be no increase in the amount that is currently being paid. As in the past, the available 10 mills will continue to be placed in a separate account and remain specifically dedicated to the following:
• 2 Mills for school buses
• 3 Mills for classroom computers and textbooks
• 5 Mills for repair of roofs and air conditioning and/or heating systems
“I am very proud of our staff and the success shown by student test results,” he said. “ A lot of this success can be attributed to the public and its support. This cooperation shows the commitment to educational excellence by the voters of our parish. Vermilion parish consistently ranks at the top when comparing tests results in the Acadiana area. The trust of the public in the ability of the vermilion parish school system to educate the youth of the community has certainly paid off.”
Puyau continued, “This renewal will continue to improve the educational well being and safety of our children and maintain the high standards of our public school system.”
The school board once again agreed to the need for a strong public information program to fully explain the May 2 renewal. The Vermilion Parish School Board staff will begin working on a public information campaign.
