Gueydan Honeybears host Montgomery in first round

Following their best regular season since 2009, the Gueydan Honeybears begin their championship push at home against the Montgomery Lady Tigers tonight.
Gueydan (20-9) enters the game as the No. 12 seed. The Honeybears were locked in at No. 9 before losing their last game of the season against Ascension Episcopal.
Montgomery (16-9) comes into the playoffs on a high note after beating fellow playoff team Logansport on the last night of the season.
“They (Montgomery) have two off guards that can shoot well and two post players that clean up the boards well, so we’ll definitely have to block out,” said Gueydan head coach Randall Bertrand. “We are going to go man-to-man and try to see what we can throw at them.
“I got two reports from two different people in their district and they’re not a bad ballclub. We’re going to have to step it up.”
The Lady Tigers came within a point of defeating district rival and No. 7 seed in Class 1A St. Mary earlier this year, and Bertrand said he believes Montgomery’s style of play is similar to Hanson who plays in the same district as Gueydan.
“They resemble Hanson,” Bertrand said. “When Hanson beat us at their place, they had two off guards who came out and started scoring and the big girl inside got a loose ball and a putback every now and then. We would have to approach this game similar to how we approached Hanson.”
Despite dropping out of the top 10 in the ranking, Bertrand said he is confident going into the playoffs in their current position.
“We’re positive,” Bertrand said. “I told them the other night after the loss to Ascension that we needed to take it home, burn it and let it go.
“We feel that they’ve done that. I told them losing Friday night could be a blessing in disguise because I like the road we’re traveling right now.”
The game is scheduled for 6:30 in Gueydan.
