Lady Eagles open playoffs at home against Logansport

So much for a down year.
That was expected of the Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles this season after losing Katie Frith, but VC (21-4, 12-0) comes into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed and will host Logansport tonight as they begin their quest for a championship.
Logansport (11-11, 7-3) is a member of District 3-1A with playoff teams Montgomery and St. Mary of Nachitoches. The Lady Tigers enter the game as the No. 31 seed, something that does not matter when it comes to the playoffs, according to VC head coach Kim Guidry.
“It’s the playoffs now, so it doesn’t matter what seed you are, you have to show up and play,” she said.
VC has come to play all year, sweeping through District 7-1A with an undefeated record. Spearheading the team’s success has been the senior pair of Ashailee Brailey and Kaylen Collins.
The team is riding on a six-game winning streak since losing to Midland on Jan. 19.
Logansport lost their last game of the season against Montgomery to back pedal into the playoffs. The Lady Tigers cause problems for many teams with their style of play, and Guidry said she is aware of what their strengths are.
“They’re very athletic and scrappy,” Guidry said. “I think everyone is capable of winning once you get into the playoffs.”
The Lady Tigers athleticism led them to a win over 5A Parkway and narrow losses to Class B powerhouse Stanley.
Winning is nothing new for the Lady Eagles, but it is always great to have an opportunity to win a championship, according to Guidry. She said she looks at each season with a grain of salt.
“Every year is a new year,” she said. “We have experience from the 2013 state championship team, so we will need other girls to step up.”
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Vermilion Catholic High School.
