Abbeville High will be moving into Class 4A next year

It appears that Abbeville High will be making a climb up the sporting landscape.
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association released on Wednesday preliminary classifications and districts for the 2015-17 sports seasons. The plan has Abbeville High moving up to Class 4 A, the state’s second largest classification.
Abbeville’s teams have competed in Class 3A since ‘09, after a move down from 4A a year prior.
This year’s cutoff for Class 4A and 3A is 649 students. Abbeville has a current enrollment of 672.
“Our numbers are just going to keep getting bigger,” Abbeville High Principal Ivy Landry said. “We plan on being over 700 next year and then over 800 the year after.
“We are moving back up to where Abbeville High was about 20 years ago.”
That is a positive on many levels.
“The community is growing again,” Landry said. “People are having confidence in an Abbevile High education, which I think is an outstanding education.
“We’re happy that we are growing, but that means in sports, you are playing at another level.”
Abbeville will be in District 5-4A, joining Breaux Bridge, Cecilia, St. Martinville and Westgate.
Vermilion Parish’s other Class 3A schools will remain on that level. Erath, Kaplan and North Vermilion will be part of District 4-3A. Rounding out the group will be Iowa, Jennings, St. Louis and Westlake.
Delcambre High will remain in Class 2A. The school will be in 5-2A with Sacred Heart-Grand Coteau (girls only), Catholic High-New Iberia, Jeanerette, Loreauville, Opelousas Catholic, David Thibodaux and West. St. Mary.
Vermilion Catholic and Gueydan will play in District 7-1A, along with Ascension Episcopal, Centerville, Central Catholic, Hanson Memorial, Highland Baptist, and Lafayette Christian.
