Abbeville man turns himself in after shooting in Texas
PRAIRIE VIEW, TX - Abbevile’s Leroy Mitchell, 27, is in custody following a deadly shooting near Prairie View A&M University in Texas on Tuesday.
According to city officials, two people were shot at the Brookside Apartments. One of those gunshot victims died.
Prairie View University Police said student Leroy Mitchell turned himself in just hours after the shooting. According to Prairie View A&M, he was a student at the school.
Neither of the victims were enrolled at the university.
This was the fourth murder in 10 months at the campus.
District Attorney from Waller County Elton Mathis says the common thread to the violence is the manufacturing, distributing, and dealing of controlled substances.
“’We’re dealing with drug dealers,” adds Mathis. He plans to work with the Waller County Sheriff and Prairie View Police Department chief to drive away the drug culture that’s posing an increasing danger to the community. Until then, Mathis is taking the unusual action of sending out his own investigators on random patrols.
