Wildcats’ winning streak snapped, lose to Tigers 60-43
Turnovers and missed opportunities.
Those two things can be the downfall of any team on any night, and it struck the Abbeville Wildcats Friday en route to a 60-43 loss at home against St. Martinville to end their six-game winning streak.
“Our performance was poor, but I think a lot of it came from St. Martinville making us play poorly,” said Abbeville head coach Berwick Hamilton. “One good thing is that maybe it grounded them (Abbeville) a little bit. Maybe they will see that they have to continue to work hard to get better.”
A 3-pointer by Drevian Evans was the first points of the game by any team, but the rest of the first quarter was basically all St. Martinville, as they closed out the the quarter on a 20-4 run to lead 20-7 at the end of the first.
The turnovers continued to pile up for Abbeville in the second quarter, but they only faced a 14-point deficit heading into halftime.
The Wildcats tried to claw back into the game with spurts in the third and fourth quarters, but they were unable to convert shots in the paint in pivotal moments.
St. Martinville’s center Javante Walker did not make life easy for Wildcat players, as he had eight blocks, and altered a dozen other shots in the lane.
“We missed shots, and had a lack of confidence in our shots,” Hamilton said. “We had a lack of offense. We did not run any offensive sets. We did a lot of dribbling, but we didn’t run any type of offense.”
Clyde Mitchell was the leading scorer for Abbeville with 14 points followed by Jourdan Brooks who had 10 points and six rebounds. Other scorers were: Chazz Duhon (2), Drevian Evans (5), Matt Johnson (7), Isaiah (2) and Clements Dorsey (3).
St. Martinville’s Bradley Savoy scored 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Andre Douchet and Javante Walker had 12 each.
Drapper Anthony and Keitha Bonhomme also added 6 points each.
The win streak is over, but Hamilton said the remedy to the problem is simple.
“The first thing we have to do is get some confidence in ourselves and each other and start practicing hard again,” he said. “The last two days of practice were awful, but I think we’re going to be OK.”
Abbeville will have a chance to get back to their winning ways Friday when they travel to play the Franklin Hornets.
