Lady Eagles remain undefeated in district, roll past LCA

The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles improved to 3-0 in district play after steamrolling the Lafayette Christian Academy Lady Knights 57-26 Tuesday night.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Lady Eagles found out they were ranked No. 3 in the Class 1A polls and went out and proved it Tuesday night.
“I’m pleased with how our kids stepped up,” VC coach Kim Guidry said. “LCA came in with a 12-5 record and we knew that had to be respected. I knew their coach Errol (Rogers) likes to shoot the 3 from his college days at UL, so we wanted to curtail their number of (3-point) attempts.”
VC now (12-3, 3-0) got off to a slow start, in part due to the LCA’s decision to defend VC with a box-and-1 defense to contain Ashailee Brailey. Guidry said it was something that the Lady Knights had done before, but they hadn’t seen it in a while. She said it is something they will have to review.
After LCA’s Myca Broussard hit a 3-pointer to cut VC’s lead to 18-14 with 3:05 left before halftime, the Lady Eagles went on a 16-2 spurt to take a 32-16 lead early in the third and the game was essentially over.
“We pulled out our offense to create some one-on-one opportunities,” Guidry said. “We had good ball movement and we were able to get some open shots and some layups.”
Brailey scored 16 points to go with six assists and five steals for the Lady Eagles, but it was the low-post dominance of Kaylen Collins, who led the VC with 22 points. Collins grabbed 14 rebounds as well as seven steals in the game.
Other VC scorers were: Lexi Langlinais (5), Leah Camel (4), Caroline David (2) and Kelly White (6).
It was White’s first game back in action in over a month since she got injured during the parish tournament.
White grabbed seven rebounds and dished three assists in the win.
“She (White) is quick, tall and can see the floor,” Guidry said. She makes things happen, but it’s nothing to take away from Caroline David who stepped up as a starter when she (White) got hurt. That’s what it’s about. We want to get people ready for down the line. The more experience everybody can get the better we are as a team.”
VC will be in action at home against Central Catholic Friday night.
