The North Vermilion Girls Basketball Tournament began Monday with four games on the slate.
In game one, Comeaux took on Church Point. The Lady Spartans were able to edge the Lady Bears 56-50.
Game two ended in blowout fashion as the Lafayette High Lady Lions thrashed Franklin 62-27. Lafayette’s defensive pressure caused problems for Franklin throughout the whole game.
The next matchup placed Erath against Iota. The Lady Dogs jumped ahead to a big halftime lead, and it was a bit too much for the Lady Bobcats to overcome.
Iota came away with a 55-42 victory. Monette Bolden led Erath in scoring with 17 points, followed by Gabrielle Harrington with 12. Costly turnovers as well as foul trouble put Erath in a tough spot.
The final game of the evening, was a matchup between the host North Vermilion and Delcambre.
Spurts by each team occurred throughout the game, but North Vermilion was victorious by a 46-38 score.
“I thought we had some good spurts,” said North Vermilion head coach Casey Meador. “We had some good two or three minute spurts where we could be really good.”
The Lady Patriots came out on fire and gained a 15-4 lead, but Delcambre stormed back with a 13-0 run to take the lead 17-15, and North Vermilion tied the game at 17 going into halftime.
North Vermilion outscored Delcambre 18-6 in the third quarter to lead by 12 heading into the fourth, and it was enough of a cushion to squash a Delcambre comeback attempt.
“Our main focus is to sustain a level of play mentally and physically that doesn’t allow the other team to have that two-to-three minute spurt where they get away from us,” Meador said.
The tournament concludes tonight with Delcambre versus Franklin, Lafayette against Erath, Comeaux vs. Iota and North Vermilion vs. Church Point.
The first game starts at 3:30 p.m. from North Vermilion.
In other local action, the Abbeville boys team fell to the Acadiana High Wreckin’ Rams 71-49 at the Louisiana Safety Systems Thanksgiving Shootout at Acadiana.
The Wildcats were down by only six at halftime, but they were outscored 34-18 in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Clyde Mitchell led the team in scoring with 11 points, and Drevian Evans chipped in 10.
At the Raising Cane’s Boys Invitational, the Erath boys defeated ESA 43-39 in their first game of the tournament.
Jaylen Sinegal led the Bobcats with 15 points, and Ross Bares was second on the team with 13.
In Erath’s second game, they were defeated 42-31 by the host team Ascension Episcopal.
The Bobcats trailed 24-7 at halftime, and could not come back from the deficit.
Elijah Mitchell was the lead man for Erath, pouring in 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
All of the local teams will be in action tonight at their respective tournaments, except for Abbeville High, whose tournament concluded on Tuesday.
