Pelican Pointe residents in Maurice may be returning home on Wednesday

MAURICE - On Tuesday, residents had to spend another night away from Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
The State Fire Marshal checked the air quality late Tuesday afternoon and released Pelican Pointe for occupancy.
According to Maurice Fire Chief Matthew Trahan, companies have been monitoring the air quality in the building for the last 48 hours. Vents in the attic were moved and changed.
Because of the changes in the air vents, the Maurice Volunteer Fire Department and Pelican Pointe had a private company monitor the air over the last 12 hours.
Crews worked overnight to fix some piping in the attic to release the gas outside the building.
To describe what happened with the ventilation system, Trahan used the analogy of lighting a fire place, then closing the flue. The smoke could not get out, so it would drift back down into the home, instead of escaping.
A decision could be made Wednesday morning if residents and staff will be able to return to Pelican Pointe, depending on the air quality.
Pelican Pointe officials are expected to inform residents and family members when a decision is made Wedneday morning.
Some residents have been with family members the last two days, while others were at Amana Christian Fellowship Center or EastRidge in Abbeville.
