Kaplan faces Notre Dame for district title

The District 6-3A crown in on the line when Kaplan travels to play Notre Dame tonight.
Both teams enter the game with identical (7-2, 4-0) records, and it comes down to the last week of the season to determine who is the king of the district.
Perennial powerhouse Notre Dame dominated the district last year. The team finished 10-0 on the season on their way to a disappointing early exit in the Division II select playoffs.
The team is back looking to improve on that second round exit to Parkview Baptist last year, but it starts with the district championship.
The Pioneer offense is led by three-year starter Brad Stoma at quarterback. Running backs Damon Comeaux and Joe Faulk lead the rushing attack for Notre Dame, along with a slew of other players.
The Kaplan Pirates enter the game on a 7-game win streak, coming off of a 22-14 win over rival Abbeville.
The Pirates finished third in the district last year behind North Vermilion and Notre Dame, but look to make the leap into first place with a victory over the Pioneers.
Running back Julius Johnson leads the team with 866 yards and nine touchdowns. The Pirates have four players that have rushed for over 200 yards this season.
Quarterback Jade Herpin has thrown for 240 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions in the traditional Wing-T offense of head coach Stephen “Tank” Lotief.
In addition to the rushing attack, Kaplan’s stout defense has been a main cog in their successful season.
The team is giving up an average of 13 points per game, led by Arizona State University commit Jalen Bates.
Bates has been a nuisance to opposing quarterbacks all season long, along with his teammates.
This is a game involving two good defenses, but offense may be the key in who takes home the District 6-3A crown.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
