Panthers face tough test against Opelousas Catholic
The Delcambre Panthers will have their hands full Friday, when they host the 7-1 Opelousas Catholic Vikings.
Delcambre (4-4, 2-1) is coming off of a 28-0 victory over Jeanerette at home. Head coach Darcy Delcambre talked about the evolution of his team over the course of the season.
“The last couple of weeks we have noticed a change in them,” he said. “They are a little more relaxed. They understand the importance of the next game. With us being in the twenties in the power rankings, a win right here would be important.”
In the LHSAA power rankings released early Tuesday morning, the Panthers were listed as No. 23 in class 2A. Coach Delcambre knows the possible boost that his team could get from a victory over an Opelousas Catholic team ranked No. 4 in the Division III rankings.
“I start looking at the situation (rankings) in the seventh week of the season,” said coach Delcambre. “I start looking at it in the second half of the season because as a coach you start looking at the possible matchups in the playoffs.”
Opelousas Catholic (7-1, 2-1) is coming off of a 42-26 loss to undefeated Catholic High of New Iberia (CHNI)
The Vikings offense is led by dual-threat quarterback David Labbe. Labbe was held in check against CHNI, but had several big games this season.
The Panthers will be looking to avenge a 34-13 loss to Opelousas Catholic from last season.
In order for Delcambre to pull off the upset, there are a few things they need to do, according to coach Delcambre.
“We have to take care of our end of the bargain,” he said. “Whenever an opportunity presents itself, we have to take advantage of it. We have to take care of the football.”
The kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
