Five Vermilion Parish Schools make A grade

Vermilion Parish has five schools that had a school performance grade of A.
Three of the five schools were elementary schools, and the other two were high schools.
Two A schools improved from being a B school last year.
Cecil Picard Elementary had one of the biggest leap in scores from last year.
Cecil Picard jumped 13 points in one year. Last year the Maurice school was a B school with a 93.50 score. This year, the score is 106.60 - an A.
The leap of 13 points makes it a “Top Gains School.”
Cecil Picard Principal Paulette Gaspard did not officially announce the school grades until after 10 in the morning on Tuesday. She first told the teachers, staff and then informed the students.
“We are super excited,” said Gaspard, who began her fourth year at the school. “All of the hard work has paid off. We had a huge growth.”
Forked Island/E. Broussard Elementary scored 97.30 (B grade) last year and improved to 100.20 for an A grade.
Seventh Ward Elementary improved 2 points from 103.2 to 105.70 for an A grade.
The two high schools with A grades were the same two high schools as last year.
Erath High went from 107.60 to 108.80.
Erath Principal Marc Turner thanked everyone for keeping Erath an A school.
“I would like to thank our teachers, students, parents and community support for playing an integral part in helping us maintain our A status as one of the elite schools in the state.”
North Vermilion High went from 102 to 105.70.
The school with the biggest increase in score goes to Kaplan Elementary with an increase in 23 points. It is also a “Top Gains School” due to its increase by more than 10 points.
The school was a C school last year with a score of 72.80. Kaplan elementary just missed making an A grade by four points. Kaplan Elementary scored a 95.80 for a B score.
Sixty eight percent of Vermilion’s schools either made an A or B grade. Twenty one percent made C grades.
There were two D schools and no F schools.
The Vermilion School District scored a 98.1 points out of a possible 150 points, which is considered a B district.
The overall score ranks Vermilion as 14th in state district standings.
School Superintendent Jerome Puyau liked the overall scores.
“While our focus is on providing the best instruction for our students and not on teaching to a test, we are always happy for good test results that reflect the hard work of our students, teachers, parents and staff,” said Puyau.

High School scores

Four out of the five high schools showed increase in test scores except one.
Kaplan High stayed a B school but increased five points to a 92.30.
Gueydan High remained a C school but increased two points (84.00).
Delcambre High, located in Iberia Parish, just missed making an A grade by one point. The school made a 99.0 for a B grade, an increase of 14 points from last year.
Abbeville High had a drop, going from a B school to a C school. The school scored an 82.30 or three points lower than last year.

Middle School scores

Two out of three middle schools in the parish saw their scores fall.
However J.H. Williams Middle School increased its score by 9 points and had a C grade.
Erath Middle and Rene Rost Middle in Kaplan both had B grades. Erath Middle scored a 96.70, 2 points lower than last year. Rene Rost dropped five points from a 93.40 to a 87.60.

Elementary School scores

Abbeville’s two elementary schools are D schools - the only two in the parish.
Eaton Park Elementary went from a C school to a D school, scoring a 62.20 (15 points lower than last year).
Herod Elementary scored the same as last year with a 60.20 (D grade).
Dozier Elementary in Erath scored a point better to remain a B school (90.60).
Meaux Elementary scored the same as last year, a 96, for a B grade.
Jesse Owens scored an 89.80 to remain a B school.
Indian Bayou Elementary stayed a B school after scoring a 94 or two points lower than last year.
LeBlanc Elementary improved two points (78.60) for a C grade.
