Eagles go for six straight wins, face Highland Baptist

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles take their five-game winning streak into their homecoming game against the Highland Baptist Bears in a district contest.
VC (5-1, 3-0) is unblemished in district play so far, with wins over Central Catholic, Lafayette Christian Academy and Gueydan.
Offensive coordinator Roch Charpentier was asked about the possibility of the distractions of homecoming interfering with his team's performance.
"When it's time to practice and play, we focus on the task at hand, and not all of the festivities that come with homecoming," he said. "So far this week, I can say our kids have done a good job of getting done what needs to get done."
The Eagles winning streak started after a tough loss to powerhouse Catholic High of New Iberia in week one.
"We are very inexperienced, and that was an early game," said Charpentier. "We made a lot of mistakes that we had to correct and we corrected them. Some kids grew up in that game because that was the first full game that they got to start. We have just been trying to improve."
Quarterback Hunter Frith leads an Eagle offense that averages 34.3 points per game. Frith has thrown for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns so far this season.
Chris Campbell and Tyler Derouen lead the rushing game for VC. Derouen has rushed for 334 yards on 62 attempts with six touchdowns. Campbell has 238 yards on 47 attempts with five scores.
Derouen is also the leading receiver on the team is well as one of the top receivers in the state. He has hauled in 36 passes for 659 yards and eight touchdowns. Emile Trahan is second on the team with 25 receptions for 442 yards and five scores.
The Bears enter the contest with a 4-2 record, with a 66-10 win most recently against Mentorship Academy.
The Bears have 14 returning starters from last year's 7-3 team. The offense is led by Logan Jordan. His top two receiving targets are tight end Brody Griffin and wideout Tyler Frederick.
The rushing attack is led by senior tailback Gary Roberts.
With the Eagles streaking through the district schedule, it would be easy for them to let off of the gas, but Charpentier said that is not a problem with this group.
"There are teams in the district that are much improved," he said. "We tell the kids all the time that no team can be overlooked. We are not good enough yet to overlook anyone. We focus more on ourselves and how we can improve individually and as a team week to week."
