Week 6 high school football review
The week 6 schedule of the high school football season opened district play for all the schools in the area.
In Vermilion Parish, the matchups were: Abbeville vs. Erath, Kaplan vs. North Vermilion, Gueydan vs. Vermilion Catholic and Delcambre vs. Westminster.
The Abbeville versus Erath matchup ended with a 49-29 victory for the Bobcats. In the matchup both teams combined for over 800 yards of offense. In the five previous games, Abbeville’s offense had struggled to get going, but against the Bobcats, they were able to rack up 358 yards of offense, with 235 of those yards rushing.
Matt Johnson rushed for 169 yards on four attempts. In his first start of the season, sophomore Demarcus Collins completed 7-15 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Abbeville tight end Tristan Greene had three catches for 52 yards. Celton Calais chipped in with two catches for 18 yards.
For Erath, quarterback Ben LeBlanc went 12-16 for 221 yards and four touchdowns. Erath rushed for 221 yards on the ground, led by Elijah Mitchell with 192 yards. Ross Granger was the leading receiver for the Bobcats with six catches for 141 yards and two scores.
In the Kaplan versus North Vermilion matchup, the Pirates were ready to play en route to their 41-14 victory.
The offense rushed for 344 yards, and was led by Julius Johnson with 160 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns. Quarterback Jade Herpin rushed eight times for 48 yards with two scores, and a passing touchdown.
North Vermilion offense struggled, being held to 71 yards of offense. Ty Desormeaux completed 6 out of 17 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Filling in for the injured Taylor Abshire and Jordan Windham, Caleb Castro rushed 16 times for 26 yards with a receiving touchdown.
Castro lead the Patriots in receiving with 26 yards and a touchdown on two catches.
Dade Dieterich had two catches for 25 yards.
In the VC versus Gueydan contest, the Eagles won in convincing fashion in a 48-0 game. The Eagles gained 369 yards of offense to Gueydan’s 153.
Quarterback Hunter Frith went 15-25 for 235 yards and 4 scores. Tyler Derouen and Chris Campbell led the ground game for the Eagles.
Each back had only three carries and made the most out of it. Derouen finished with 68 yards and a touchdown, and Campbell finished with 63 yards and a score.
Derouen led the team in receiving yards with 112 and two scores, and Emile Trahan added 57 yards and two scores.
The Delcambre Panthers defeated the Westminster Crusaders 22-7, to earn their third win of the season.
Delcambre rushed for 158 yards, with Bubba Latiolais leading the way for the Panthers with 108 yards on 16 attempts and a score.
The Panthers earned two non-offensive touchdowns during the game. Trevor Peltier returned a punt 77 yards for a score, and Zack Frederick returned a fumble 26 yards to seal the game for Delcambre.
Every team continues their district schedule, as the games get tougher every week.
