KHS’s Herpin scores three touchdowns in second game back
“Whatever it takes to win,” is a saying that many players use, but Kaplan quarterback Jade Herpin seems to truly live by that mantra.
Whether it is going 2-5 for 20 yards and a touchdown pass or picking up 35 yards rushing on one drive while running the read option, Herpin says he just wants to help his team win.
Friday night versus district rival North Vermilion, Herpin did just that. In his second game back from a concussion, Herpin responded with three total touchdowns to help lead the Pirates to a 41-14 victory.
“It feels amazing to just be back on the field,” he said. “I don’t care if I hadn’t scored at all.
“Anything to help the team win.”
On the second Pirate drive of the game, the team needed him to move the chains with first-down runs of 10, 11 and 14 yards.
Head coach Stephen “Tank” Lotief spoke about Herpin’s performance after the big win.
“He’s getting the rust off,” he said. “We opened up the playbook a little bit more for him. He did a great job. The offensive line did a great job. The defensive line put pressure on their quarterback, and our secondary didn’t budge. Great job by the defense.”
In his second game back, Herpin talked about the process of coming back and being effective for the team.
“When you are out with a concussion, you can’t really run or anything, so you are out of shape,” he said. I had to try and get back in shape and catch up to what the team was doing. You just have to get back into the swing of things.”
Herpin finished the game with a total of 44 yards rushing on 7 carries. Kaplan has a tough test next week when they face reigning district champion Notre Dame.
