Erath and Abbeville square off in district opener
The district schedule kicks in to gear tonight when Erath travels to face Abbeville.
Going into the game, it is a tale of teams heading in opposite directions. Erath (2-3) has won two consecutive games, and seem to be hitting their stride on both sides of the ball under first-year head coach David Comeaux.
Quarterback Ben LeBlanc and running back Elijah Mitchell lead the way for the Bobcat offense. Up to this point, LeBlanc is 36-96 for 600 yards and six touchdowns with four interceptions.
Mitchell leads Vermilion Parish with 407 yards on 79 attempts with five touchdowns in only four games. He missed a game earlier in the season due to injury.
The leading receiver for the Bobcats is Ross Granger. Granger has 14 receptions for 282 yards and three scores. The Erath offensive line has served as the catalyst for the success of the Erath offense.
District rival Abbeville (0-5) arrives for the game, on a 15-game losing streak, with most recently a 39-14 loss to Loreauville. Quarterback Bryce Melancon is at the helm of the Wildcat offense. Melancon has thrown for 421 yards and a touchdown so far this season.
The rushing attack for Abbeville is key. Matt Johnson enters the game as the leading rusher with 136 yards on 32 carries with two touchdowns. Malik Small is the second on the team with 135 yards on the ground and one score.
Celton Calais is the leading receiver for Abbeville with 11 catches for 131 yards.
“This is a rivalry game so our guys should be ready,” Comeaux said “Hopefully we can continue to play well.”
