Abbeville woman turns 103 years old

Maudie Carter Hutchins is not going to pretend she knows the secret to living a long life. On Saturday, she reached the impressive age of 103.
“I do not know why I have lived this long,” said Hutchins during her birthday party at Maison du Monde Living Center. “All I know is the Lord put me on this Earth. When He is ready, He will take me home.”
This week, He was not ready to take her. She celebrated her birthday with other residents at the living center.
Hutchins was born in 1911 and she had four children, Sylvia Hudson, Judy Camel, David Hutchins and Jerry Hutchins; eight grandchildren and seven great, great grandchildren.
Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza presented Hutchins with a key to the city of Abbeville.
She grew up in Texas and then moved to Louisiana 50 years ago.
When she was young, the only car color you could buy was black.
Not until she was 45 years old did she own her first TV set or air conditioning unit for her home in the early 1950s.
At the age of 57, she flew in her first airplane.
During World War II, she was a wife and mother. She said she remembers rationing sugar, butter and coffee during the war.
Her husband, Jack, died in 1967 and she never married again.
