Kaplan family asking for donations challenged by Kaplan fire chief

Pictures circulating on social media are showing a different account of what a family in Kaplan is saying.

Last week, the Kishna Judge's vehicle caught fire, and spread to her car port. The rental home is located on West Eighth Street. The family immediately began asking for clothing donations, claiming they had lost everything in the fire. A GoFundMe.com account was also set up for monetary donations.

"After seeing several donation sites going up," said Kaplan Fire Chief Jacob Mathiew, "I had to let people know this was not a case of them losing all their possessions. We used a little water in the attic, but we did not need much because the fire was contained to the truck and the outside of the house under the garage. The water that was used, we cleaned it off the floor."

Judge claims the damages from the smoke and water is forcing her and her eight children out of the home.

Mathtiew disputes that and said he had to stop them from getting money out of "good hearted people" who want to help someone in need. He said they are being deceitful when they say they lost "everything" in the fire.

The GoFundMe.com page has since been taken down.

The family said they are currently living with family and friends.
