Abbeville loses to Port Barre on the final play of the game

Friday night’s Abbeville High’s homecoming game against the Port Barre Red Devils was crazy - especially the way it ended.
Abbeville was one second away from ending its 14-game losing streak that dates back to last season.
It came down to the final play of the game and then streak would be over.
But, on this night, it was not meant to be for the Wildcats.
Port Barre quarterback Austin Lanclos was facing a second down on Abbeville’s 37-yard-line with one second left in the game.
Standing on the Port Barre side of the field was 6-foot-4 Red Devil receiver Tyler Ledoux.
Ledoux had not had a catch all game because Port Barre only had one reception the entire game.
Somehow, Lanclos connected with the tall receiver at the one-yard-line, and he fell into the end zone as time expired.
Port Barre would win the game, 12-8, and everything went silent in Wildcat Stadium.
Less than a minute earlier the Wildcats were celebrating after scoring their only touchdown of the game.
Abbeville took the lead of the game with 38 seconds remaining.
AHS quarterback Bryce Melancon found Tristan Greene, the tight end, cutting across the middle of the field.
Greene, who was selected the homecoming king earlier in the week, outran the Port Barre defenders to the corner of the end zone for a touchdown.
The TD tied the game, 6-6. The Wildcats lined up to kick the go-ahead extra point but instead, faked it and went for two.
Darmarcus Collins, the holder and backup quarterback, picked up the ball on the snap and threw it to Matt Johnson for the successful two-point conversion.
Abbeville, clinging to an 8-6 lead, kicked off to Port Barre. Port Barre returned it to the 50-yard-line with 15 seconds left in the game.
The play that put Port Barre in position to win the game was a 15-yard sideline penalty on the Abbeville coaches.
It would be their fourth sideline penalty of the game.
The third sideline penalty was on AHS Head Football Coach Chris Towery two minutes into the second half. He got his first and second 30 seconds earlier.
With Towery getting ejected from the game after the third sideline penalty, the AHS assistant coaches called the offensive plays.
To make matters worse,
At the end of the third period, Abbeville tailback Malik Small injured his arm on a run. The game was stopped for 30 minutes until Acadian Ambulance arrived and wheeled him off the field into the ambulance.
The Wildcats had their chances to score and were within 20 yards of the goal three times. Instead of going forward, Abbeville went backwards with penalties and fumbles.
With the game still knotted 0-0 with seven minutes to play, the Wildcats fumbled, and Port Barre’s Trevun Tyler picked up the football on the bounce and ran it back 70 yards for a touchdown.
The Wildcats had 248 yards of offense, compared to Port Barre’s 177.
Melancon was 11 out of 23 throwing for 132 yards.
Matt Johnson led AHS with six totes for 33 yards. Collins had eight for 34 yards.
Collin Calais led AHS in receiving with four for 23 yards.
Greene’s only catch was a 47-yard touchdown reception.
Abbeville is on the road Friday to battle Loreauville in a non-district game.
