Bears host Trojans, looking for first win
The Gueydan Bears are hobbling into their week three matchup versus the Sacred Heart Trojans.
During a 28-0 loss to Grand Lake last week, the Bears suffered a bevy of injuries.
“We lost three seniors for the rest of the season,” said Gueydan head coach Jay Landry. “So far this week, only 15 guys have been able to practice. We are trying to preserve the health of our guys by lessening the contact during practice, and doing basic drills.”
The Trojans enter the game with an 0-2 record, but according to Landry, the record does not match the caliber of team that they are.
“Those guys are 0-2, but only because of the two teams that they faced,” he said. “Basile and Opelousas Catholic are two really good teams, so that record does not reflect on how good this team is.”
Gueydan hopes to get their first win of the season, but younger players will need to step up in the absence of the senior leaders that went down due to injury.
“Now, we are forced to just plug players in that don’t have much game experience,” said Landry. “Due to all the injuries, we can’t get many reps on offense, and that’s what’s making it tough for us. “With the young guys that will be playing, it is important for them to get as much practice in as possible.”
Despite an undersized and depleted team number-wise, one thing has been a constant for the Bears.
“We have played hard in every game,” said Landry. “I am proud of how the guys have never given up.”
The Bears host the Trojans at 7 p.m. Friday.
