Kiwanis Club names Abbeville High’s Broussard as its ‘Student of the Month’

Britney Broussard could have plenty of free time in her day.
The Abbeville High senior certainly has the option. Broussard, 19, wraps up each school day after second hour, which ends around 9:15 a.m.
Rather than go take it easy, Broussard goes to work, whether that is to her job at Broussard Brothers, where she works three days a week, or to take care of her animals.
“I like to stay busy,” Broussard said.
She took some time out of her busy schedule Tuesday afternoon to meet with the Abbeville Kiwanis Club, which honored her as its student of the Month.
“I am thankful to the club for this recognition,” Broussard said.
Along with a sign to place in her yard, Broussard received a gift card to Sonic in Abbeville.
Abbeville High Principal Ivy Landry said Broussard is well deserving of any recognition she receives.
“She is a great student who is very involved,” Landry said. “She is just a great kid who wants to be successful.”
Her time in 4-H is an example of that success.
“I am very involved with the 4-H program,” Broussard told the Kiwanians. “My whole family is. We show cows, chickens, livestock like that. It is a big part of my life.”
Broussard is the president of the 4-H’s Junior Leader club in Vermilion Parish.
“Our service project for the group this year is the environment,” Broussard said. “We are calling it ‘Keeping Louisiana on the Map.’ We are going to do beach sweeps and plant marsh grass along the coast.”
While Louisiana is the focus, the state’s boundary will not be the group’s limit.
“We are going on a trip to Galveston (Texas),” Broussard explained. “We are going to help people over there plant marsh grass.
“We want to help them keep their community beautiful, as well.”
Broussard, the daughter of Tim and Gwen Broussard, is one of seven children in her family, ranging from ages 25 to 10.
“I am number four,” she told the Kiwanis members.
What made Broussard’s fourth year of high school a bit less time consuming is the effort she put into the first three.
“I earned most of my credits by the end of my junior year,” Broussard said.
She has the next few years of her educational life already planned.
“I want to be an X-ray tech,” she said of her career path. “I am going to start taking classes this spring at LSU Eunice and then eventually transfer to McNeese (State University) to complete my bachelor’s.”
Landry said he has complete confidence in any plan Broussard puts together.
“No matter what she gets into,” Landry said, “she is going to be successful. I know she said X-ray tech, but she could go into anything because she comes from a great family.
“She is just a great student.”
One who is not going to just go home and relax after leaving Abbeville High’s campus at same time fast food restaurants are still serving breakfast for another hour.
“I don’t like to just sit around and waste my day,” Broussard said. “If I am not at my job, I like to be outside with my cows.
“I am going to find something to do.”
