Vermilion Elementary School students learn where veggies come from by planting garden
Have you ever asked a student where they think their food comes from? Many may give you the answer, “From the store!” Vermilion Parish elementary schools are trying to make sure their students know where food comes from before it enters the store.
This nine weeks fifth grade students from Eaton Park, Herod, LeBlanc and Dozier elementary schools are learning how to plant gardens.
This week, Dan Devenport of the LSU Ag Center was at Eaton Park Elementary showing students how to plant seeds, along with transplanting plants into larger containers.
Superintendent Jerome Puyau dressed as a farmer in overalls and got his hands dirty by helping to plant.
“We are doing a hands on process in which students have and interval part in the growing process,” said Puyau. “They learn it in the classroom and they get to plant it, watch it grow and get their hands dirty. They see the entire cycle of growth.”
In a few weeks, the schools will have a harvest day. The students will pick the plants and learn how to cook the vegetables they picked.
The plants and materials were made possible through a grant from Chevron, and the help of the American Heart Association and Activate4Kids.
