Week 1 high School football review
Overall, it was a tough week for most of the local high school football teams.
Six out of the seven teams in the area suffered losses, with the lone exception being Delcambre, who claimed a 14-13 victory over Berwick.
Tough non-district opponents could have played a part in the down week for local teams, as majority of them played very playoff teams from last season.
Offense was hard to come by for the teams, as the highest point output was earned by the North Vermilion Patriots who scored 20 points in their loss to Episcopal of Baton Rouge.
North Vermilion senior Seth Patin had the best statistical week scoring a total of 14 total points with Delcambre’s Bubba Latiolais in second place with 12 points stemming from the two rushing touchdowns he scored in the Panthers’ victory.
Patin scored a touchdown on a 15-yard reception from Ty Desormeaux. In his other duties as field-goal kicker, Patin nailed two field-goals and converted on two extra point attempts.
In the passing game, Vermilion Catholic quarterback Hunter Frith led the area in passing yards with 219 yards in the Screamin’ Eagles game vs. Catholic High of New Iberia.Erath’s Ben LeBlanc was the only other passer in the area with triple-digit numbers. LeBlanc threw for 139 yards in the Bobcats game vs. Iowa.
Jordan Windham from North Vermilion was the area’s leading rusher with an efficient 117 yards on eight attempts, good for an average of over 14 yards per carry. Delcambre’s Latiolais finished with 116 yards on 26 carries. Finishing with just a shade under 100 yards rushing was Latiolais’s teammate Zach Trahan with 94 yards on the ground.
Vermilion Catholic receivers hold the top two spots in receiving for week one with Emile Trahan finishing with 99 yards on nine catches, and Tyler Derouen catching six passes for 86 yards.
Follow the teams into week two as Abbeville travels to play St. Louis, Erath goes to Catholic High of New Iberia, Vermilion Catholic hosts Welsh, Gueydan hosts Grand Lake, North Vermilion travels to Rayne, Kaplan hosts Church Point and Delcambre travels to play Lake Arthur.
