Murals now in place on Cushing - more to come
Three beautiful murals now welcome residents and visitors into downtown Kaplan. They can be seen on the east side of Cusing Boulevard.
“We are super excited they are up,” said Mayor Kirk Champagne. “The city has been receiving such positive feedback from them. The scenery, along with the vibrant colors make the signs stand out magnificently.”
Champagne stated these are only the first to be completed. The next murals are to be installed next to the Kaplan museum and the Kaplan Food Bank, then, near Madi Claire’s.
The projects are being funded by the interest received on the CD’s the city has.
“All the interest from these CD’s are being invested right back into the beautification of our city,” said Champagne.
The city extends a huge thank you to the artist, Klebe Meaux. The 56 running feet of art equals 150 hours of labor.
“Klebe did not charge us a dime for his talent,” said Champagne. “All we had to furnish were the materials.”
Meaux, formerly the principal at Pecan Island High school, said the scenery he witnessed each day as he traveled to Pecan Island was his inspiration for the murals.
“I was very inspired by the community and the wildlife encountered each day,” said Meaux. “These murals are representative of my journey to the wetlands, as these and especially Pecan Island, are linked by our beautiful city.
“As those hunters and fisherman travel to the islands, let us all appreciate the beauty of nature and pray that our city will be protected, preserved and enhanced.
“When you are driving through Kaplan on Cushing and head south to go fishing and hunting, stop by and help our businesses on your way.”
Assisting Meaux on the project were Emma Broussard, Sidney Dartez, Lauren Callahan, Lanie Labry and Dr. Padmini Gupta.
