Eagles face Vikings in Jamboree

Game week is always intense in football, even if it is only the week of the jamboree. Vermilion Catholic travels to square off against the Opelousas Catholic Tigers at Teurlings High School at 6 p.m. tonight. The Eagles are apart of the Kiwanis Jamboree, and Teurlings is the site where all of the select schools will play.
The jamboree is a game that does not count against records, but it still matters to the teams involved. The goal is to win the game, but the jamboree is also used as a time for teams to get some of the kinks out, and begin to clean up everything before week 1 of the season.
“The goal is to go out there and execute on offense and defense,” said head coach Russell Kuhns. “We want to try and take care of the football.”
The Eagles have question marks heading into the game, as they try to repeat as champions, while coping with the loss of 15 starters from last year’s undefeated team. Kuhns talked about the question marks and what the plan would be heading into the game from a play calling standpoint.
“There are always question marks,” he admitted. “We are always looking for someone to come in and step up. We’ll just wait and see what happens.”
“I’m going to call the defense how I would normally call it,” he said. “Opelousas Catholic is a good football team. Simply playing against them will help us to become a more competitive football team.
One of the biggest questions that the Eagles face heading into the jamboree, is the play at quarterback by first-year starter Hunter Frith, who looked good in the scrimmage versus Loreauville on Friday. Kuhns mentioned his expectations for Frith, and vocalized his confidence in the senior quarterback.
“I expect him to step up,” Kuhns said. “He’s a competitor. He’ll do a good job, and I expect him to run our offense and do what he needs to do.”
Opelousas Catholic is a great tune-up for the Eagles in preparation for the season. The Eagles open up the season in week one traveling to New Iberia to play the Catholic High Panthers.
