Omega Protein to invest in Intracoastal City plant
INTRACOASTAL CITY – Omega Protein Corporation, a nutritional product company and a leading integrated producer of omega-3 fish oil and specialty protein products, announced an investment at its Intracoastal City fish processing plant that will include the installation of a new steam dryer and other equipment.
The project is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2015 fishing season.
“The decision to dedicate additional funding to the Intracoastal City facility will allow Omega Protein to modernize the plant, and also shows our continuing commitment to our Gulf Coast fishing operations and our employees,” said Omega Protein President and CEO, Bret Scholtes.
The new dryer and cooling tower is expected to improve efficiency and allow the Company to increase the volume that can be processed during peak fishing periods.
“Historically, Omega Protein’s Abbeville plant (in Intracoastal City) has been our most productive facility in the Gulf, harvesting strong numbers of fish and producing excellent fish oil yields,” said Al Vidrine, General Manager of the facility, “This investment in the plant illustrates that Omega Protein is building and investing for the future. The fish meal and fish oil business is a growing marketplace that demands our high quality products, and here in Abbeville we are poised to provide them.”
On June 24, Omega Protein’s Intracoastal City plant was awarded the Lantern Award by Louisiana’s Department of Economic Development in recognition of being the best manufacturer in Acadiana, Louisiana’s South Central region of the state. The plant has been in continuous operation for nearly 50 years and employs approximately 300 people.
