Natural gas find under Abbeville
It looks like there may be gas under the city of Abbeville based on a recent gas find.
At the Abbeville City Council meeting Tuesday night, Councilman Brady Broussard shared some positive news to the council, Mayor Mark Piazza and the audience.
Broussard said it was announced Tuesday morning that sands containing gas was discovered in a well being drilled off Marcus Road, next to the Chris Crusta Airport in Abbeville.
It is being drilled by Pennington Operating Company.
The company has been drilling for three weeks and still has another two weeks of drilling before it reaches its target depth.
Broussard did not know how deep the target depth is. He did say the gas discovery was not at the project depth. It was a lagniappe discovery, Broussard added.
The reason this is good news for the city is because the oil company that drilled leased all of the land at the Abbeville airport. The airport will be in the pool to receive money from the producing well.
Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said, according to FAA guidelines, the money received from the gas well has to be used at the airport. The money can not be placed in the general fund and used for payroll or other city issues. Only the airport, Piazza said.
