Athlete of the Year
The 2014 Male Corey Mellebeck Athlete of the Year award is awarded to Vermilion Catholic’s Kyle Zenon.
“I am so proud to even be nominated for an award like this,” Zenon said. “To win this award is a great honor. I just have to thank my family and coaches. Without all of them there is no way I could have had a year good enough to even be in this conversation.”
Zenon won this award based on the fact he was named to the first team All-State, All-District, All-Acadiana and All-Parish teams as a left tackle in football.
To go along with his skills on the football field, it was his performance in track and field that put him over the top.
Zenon not only won every event he entered over the course of the track and field regular season, but he brought home three state championships at the 1A State Championship track and field meet.
He won four state championships over the course of the school year.
One with the Eagles football team, and three in track and field. He won the shot put, discus and javelin events at the state meet.
“Kyle (Zenon) is a special athlete,” head track coach George Vezeay said. “Not only is he a great kid on the field, but he is also a tremendous student.”
Zenon is a senior at VC and is on his way to the McNeese State University on a football and track and field scholarship.
“We are going to miss Kyle (Zenon),” VC head football coach Russell Kuhns said. “He was a great athlete on the field for us and in the locker room. He is an asset that will be missed.”
Based on the point system Zenon edged out Devanta Davis of Kaplan and Brennan Gallet of VC for the award.
“I think this is just a great way to finish on my career at VC,” Zenon said.
