Bobcats wrap up spring practice
The spring practices have wrapped up for the Erath Bobcats with a spring game/scrimmage against Berwick Thursday night.
“Now that the spring is over we have a lot of work to do, come the summer time,” Erath head coach David Comeaux said. “The games we win in the fall will be won with the work we do in the summer. We are going to have to come and work our butts off this summer.”
These spring practices and spring game were crucial for the Bobcats simply because they need as much time to learn the new system that coach Comeaux is trying to implement in his first season at Erath.
Along with being important for the players, it is important for the coaches as well.
“It is good for us (the coaches) to get out here and do this because we are trying to learn the system too,” defensive coordinator David Jordan said. “Out on the field though we saw some good things. I think the thing we can hang our hat on is the fact that we play hard, tough football, and that is something that is hard to teach. So it’s good we got that going in the spring.”
As far as the game itself, it was a regular spring game where the first, second and third team offenses would run a few series of plays, and then switch sides.
The Bobcats defense allowed three Berwick touchdowns on the nine different drives Berwick attempted.
The offense for the Bobcats took a little bit to get started.
The only time they were able to score was on their last series of the night.
It started with a 14 yard run by Elijah Mitchell.
Then quarterback Ben LeBlanc hit wide receiver Ross Granger on a 39 yard pass.
Then Mitchell had a 15 yard run followed by a seven yard touchdown run.
Again it was the only score by the Bobcats offense.
“We saw some good things, and some things that need to be worked on,” Comeaux said. “It was a spring game, and we were just running basic plays out there, but the important thing is that we saw some good things.
“Anytime there is good things in a spring game it is a place to start. Again, we are going to have to do some work in the summer time, but we have a great bunch of kids that are willing to put in the work.”
The Bobcats have some time before the season begins this coming fall.
Coach Comeaux knows they have some stuff to work on. He also knows they have a solid foundation to build on, and that is the most important thing to take away from the spring practices.
