Kaplan’s Herpin named All-Parish Coach of the Year
For the second year in a row the All-Parish Coach of the Year comes from Kaplan.
Shay Herpin is the 2014 Vermilion Parish Coach of the Year.
“It is an honor for me to have been chosen as the All-Parish Coach of the year,” Herpin said. “As much as an honor it is for me to win this award, it is also an honor for my team as well. If I don’t have good players and parents I can’t win something like this. So much like the season it is a team effort.
“Having said that, I am honored to have been chosen for this award.”
The Lady Pirates under the tutelage of Herpin were able to finish the season with a 22-5 overall record, and won the Class 6-3A District Championship.
Herpin was able to lead his Lady Pirates team to the number two overall seed in Class 3A.
The Lady Pirates also earned a trip to Sulphur for the Fastpitch 56 State Championship tournament, where the Lady Pirates lost to the North Vermilion Lady Patriots in the quarterfinal round.
“Winning the district title was a big accomplishment for us,” Herpin said. “The season didn’t end the way we would have hoped it would, but it wasn’t because our kids didn’t try their best.
“Those kids played their butts off all season long. Their hard work all season long is the main reason we were able to win the district title, and make it to Sulphur.”
The Lady Pirates are constantly one of the best teams in not only Vermilion Parish, but in the state, and it is all because of coach Herpin.
“I think we have good players year in and year out and that is the main reason we are able to be so successful,” Herpin said. “The players always make the coach, and it is no different here. The one constant from year to year is that we never approach a new season with what we can do, we always focus on the things we can’t do and try to get better and better each and every day.
That mentality is what makes coach Herpin one of the best in the state.
