Abbeville’s Cutright named Outstanding Performer
After missing the Pirate Relays with an illness, Abbeville’s Paige Cutright came back to the Parish Relays, and it looked as though she never missed a beat.
She was named as the Outstanding Performer of the Parish Relays with a win in the high jump competition and a second place finish in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.
For Cutright, track is something she does because she loves it and it gets her competitive juices flowing.
“I fell in love with track because I finally found something I’m good at,” Cutright said. “Also, I’m a very competitive person, and this gives me a chance to use my competitive nature for something good.”
As a senior, the thought of the Parish Relays being one of her last track meets didn’t sink in until the event was over.
“I didn’t sink in till tonight,” Cutright said. “Now that I think about it, it is kind of sad. I may only have one more meet left in my high school career and it’s kind of sad, but at the same time it is good because I can move forward and work on some bigger dreams.”
Those dreams for Cutright include running for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and possible one day even competing at the Olympic level.
“One of my biggest goals is to run for UL,” Cutright said. “Even bigger than that though is that I want to run for the Olympic team.”
According to Cutright she has already been accepted to attend UL, and once she gets there she will be attempting to walk on to the UL track team.
“It just want to go out there and give it my all,” Cutright said. “Of course I want to win, but as long as did the best I can I’m sort of satisfied.”
Cutright said that two of her biggest supporters has been coaches Ward Courville and Erik Lege.
“She just works so hard,” Lege said. “I’m just so glad to see some good things finally going right for her.”
Cutright only has possibly three more meets left in her career.
The first of those three chances is this Wednesday in the District 6-3A meet, which will be held on Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m.
