Lady Pirates crush Cecilia
The Kaplan Lady Pirates softball is playing some of their best softball right now, which is good considering the playoffs bracket is suppose to be announced at some point today.
With a 14-2 win over Class 4A Cecilia, the Lady Pirates have won their last eight games, and 16 of their last 17 games.
They have only lost one game in the past month.
“That is a good win against a well coached team,” Kaplan Head Coach Shay Herpin said. “It is usually a fight, and this time we got on them early. We have been swinging the bats well, and hopefully it can stay that way come playoff time.”
In the game against Cecilia the Lady Pirates got out to an early 4-1 lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
They would extend that lead in the bottom of the second inning, by batting around the lineup.
The first seven batters for the Lady Pirates not only reached base safely, but all seven of them scored, to give the Lady Pirates a commanding 11-1 lead.
The Lady Pirates would score three more runs in the bottom of the third to give them their winning score of 14-2.
“We are trying to get the girls in a rhythm,” Herpin said. “We are trying to get them focused on the task at hand. Even though we won big today, we made some mental errors. If we want to win a championship we have to clean that up.”
Abby Trahan pitched all five innings for the Lady Pirates and in her five innings on the mound she only allowed two runs on six hits.
She also managed to strike out nine Cecilia batters.
The Lady Pirates are still currently ranked two in the Class 3A power rankings, and only trail John Curtis by .2 of a point.
“The girls are playing well right now,” Herpin said. “We just want to get some practice time to make sure we are as good as we can be entering the playoffs.”
The Lady Pirates will know their seed later this afternoon.
