Abbeville’s Katina Perry runs away with competition

The Abbeville girls track team has won the past three track meets including the Patriots Relays that were run on Monday night.

They won the Patriot Relays with 102 points.

One of the main reasons the Lady Wildcats track team has found success is Katina Perry.

For every track meet the Lady Wildcats have won, senior Katina Perry has been named the Outstanding Track Performer, in each of those three meets.

Perry runs in the 100 and 300-meter hurdle races, and have won both of those events for three straight meets.

She is also a member of the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams.

The love of track started at a young age for Perry.

“I love to run,” Perry said. “I started running when I was a little girl, and I started on the track team when I was in seventh grade. Ever since then running has been a passion of mine. I couldn’t picture my life without track. I love it so much.”

Her coach, Erik Lege, is happy to have Perry on his team.

“She is great to coach,” Lege said. “She makes my job so easy. She has the drive and determination that I don’t have to try very hard to motivate her because she does that all by herself. The goals she has set makes her work hard, and I love that.”

The goal that Perry has is to not only win a state championship, but it is to run track at the collegiate level, and possibly on the national and international levels.

“I want to continue to run as long as I can,” Perry said. “My goal is to run for McNeese, and hopefully one day in the Olympics. First though I have to worry about trying to win a State Championship”

Along with wanting to run track at McNeese, she is also wanting to attend to get her Business degree.

Perry is a special athlete that is the “MVP” for one of the best track teams in the parish.

She runs the final leg of all the relays she is a part of, and she does it with a smile on her face.

So, if you get a chance on a Friday night head out to the track meet.

When you get there look for Katina Perry, she will be the one more than likely winning the Outstanding Track Performer.
