Guidry, Frith headed to All-Star game

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association is putting on its annual East-West All-Star game at Bossier Parish Community College tomorrow afternoon starting at two p.m.

The special thing about this game is that two members of the Vermilion Catholic girls basketball team are going to be participating.

Kim “Gidge” Guidry, the Lady Eagles head coach, is going to be coaching the East team, while senior Katie Frith from VC is going to be playing in the game.

“It is an honor to be asked to coach this game,” Guidry said. “It is a chance of a lifetime, and I’m fortunate that this is my second time to be asked to coach.

“There are a lot of great coaches that never get a chance to do this. So, it really is an honor.”

The last time Guidry was asked to be a coach in the game was in 1999 right after Guidry won her first state championship at VC.

She was an assistant coach for the All-Star game, and this time around she will be the head coach.

Coach Guidry also thinks that is quite the honor that she will get to coach Frith one more time.

“It is one more time to interact with her on the court,” Guidry said. “It will be nice to see her out there on the court for the last time in her career, and I’m just glad that I can be there for it.”

As for Frith she is just excited to play one last game with her coach.

“It is a real honor to have been chosen to play in this game,” Frith said. “I owe a lot to ‘Gidge’ she is the main reason I allowed her to put me in the running to be nominated.

“I also know that this is going to be my last basketball game. Unlike the Arcadia game, I know this is coming and it will be nice to be able to go out there and play with ‘Gidge’ one more time.”

Along with Frith and Guidry, Randi Brown and Mio Knight from Central Catholic are also playing in the game, and both Guidry and Frith are both happy to be finally playing with them instead of against them.

“It will be nice to be game planning with them on my team instead of game planning against them,” Guidry said. “This just goes to show you how good the talent pool for this All-Star game is.

“We have played against them and tried to stop them, but now we get to play with them. It is also a great chance to coach Katie (Frith) and coach some of the best basketball players from across the state.”

Frith shares the same sentiments as her coach does.

“Those two (Brown and Knight) are so talented, and it’s just an honor to be on the court with them,” Frith said. “This just goes to show you how deep the talent is across the state of Louisiana.”

The All-Star game will be played in Bossier City in the Bossier Parish Community College gymnasium.

The girls game is scheduled to start at two p.m. tomorrow afternoon, and the guys game starts at four p.m.
