Abbeville skate park nearing completion
Construction on the skate park in Abbeville is nearing completion.
The skateboarding area is located at A.A. Comeaux Park. The project is a joint effort among the City, Abbeville Rotary Club and Vermilion Parish Police Jury.
“It’s close,” said Rotarian Rob Roy, who is helping lead the project. “We thought they were going to finish the last pouring of the cement last Saturday.
“We are real close to it being completed.”
Recent rain has held up the project’s end. Until that time comes, officials are asking that people not use the park.
“We ask that for the preservation of the park,” Roy said.
The work site has orange net fencing around it. Abbeville Police Chief Tony Hardy said his department has not received many calls about people using the park.
“As long as it is not open to the public we are going to advise people to not use it,” Hardy said. “We will have some extra patrol in the area.”
Again, Roy said the official opening is not too far away.
“There is a very little bit of cement left to be poured,” Roy said. “It is all formed up and ready to go. After that, it is really just clean-up work. They will compact the dirt and level it.
“Once it is finished, we are going to do an official ground-breaking ceremony with all of the people involved.”
At its completion the project will have cost $50,000. Of that, the City put up $20,000 and the Police Jury contributed $10,000. The City’s amount matched that of the Rotary Club, which raised more than $20,000 during a Comedy Night fundraiser last March.
The Rotary Club is set for similar fundraiser this year. The event is scheduled for March 15 at Magdalen Place. Roy said all funds will go toward projects that will serve youth in the area.
“The purpose of the event is to go to those kind of projects,” Roy said. “All of those events will be earmarked for youth projects.”
